Questions and answers about AS Roma, match tickets, match restrictions, merchandise, ID, Ultras, fan websites and more (continues on next page...)
(1) What is the face value of Roma tickets?
A: From €5 (Curva tickets, early TIM Cup / Coppa Italia rounds) to €120 (best longside seats for Inter, Milan, Lazio, Juventus & other important matches). For most matches, category 3 tickets cost between €20 - €30, category 2; €45, category 1; €80. Roma change their ticket prices often and at short notice to confuse as many people as possible.
(2) Why do I need to give out personal details just to get football tickets?
A: The Italian authorities are quite obsessed with documents and ID cards. It is nigh on impossible to do anything here without them. By the same token, without the grotesque quantities of paperwork which bloat municipal offices in every town and city on the peninsula, Italy would collapse overnight.
At football matches, this obsession takes on a life of it's own. Multiple security check points await the ticket holder, each manned by stewards and / or a bewildering array of regular police, military police, and if you're really unlucky, the army.
It's not so much a case of them wanting to know who is going to a football match (tooled up hooligans slipping through the net and going on the rampage), as it is that being Italian, they are compelled by a deep-seated mistrust of foreigners to know who is in their country, and why.
Think big brother, because at the end of the day Italy is a police state and it's the same for everyone; they beat and baton charge their own with just as much senseless aggression as seen when they illegally assaulted Manchester United supporters in 2007. Of course, the victims were assaulted in custody and the perpetrators got away scot free.
(3) There are many sites selling AS Roma football tickets, which one should I choose?
A: If you are trying to get hold of specific seats in a specific stand, like the Curva Sud, it's better to use a specialist website like Roma Lazio, as they have far more experience than anyone else out there when it boils down to the fine details. If you just want to get in to see the match, click here to order your AS Roma tickets directly.
(4) What is the risk of getting forgeries? Are the tickets you sell official?
A: There is no risk. All tickets purchased via this website are genuine and come from official sources.
(5) Roma fans have a reputation for being violent and attacking lone opposition fans in groups, especially when English clubs are drawn to play against their team in the Champions League. Is it safe for English fans to watch Roma in league and cup matches?
A: At league and cup matches it's fine. If you are in the Curva Sud, don't broadcast the fact that you are English. If you are Irish, it's better. If you are English when a club from back home is playing in Rome, don't wear colours and only sit / stand in the away section. Get your girlfriend to smile sweetly at the police. When the rain of coins and plastic lighters hits, don't throw them back or you'll be baton charged.
(6) Which AS Roma news websites do you recommend (in English)?
A: Roma Offside is managed by a guy called Chris. Packing bags of Irish American potential, he spends plenty of time writing about Roma. We wager that he's never visited Rome in his entire life, but then again what do we know? He was probably born and raised in Tor Pignattara. Chris does know his stuff, however, and his output is a never-ending source of amusement for the watching web. Roma Lazio is a good port of call, updated regularly with live match reports and player news etc. No website is better for the lowdown on football in Rome. No mention of the old Channel 4 pages until Suzy Campanale retires.
(7) Why are some Serie A matches restricted?
A: Because the Italian authorities are paranoid. If 50 hooligans did turn up, what could they do in the face of 2,000 assorted armed police? Besides, the entire world knows that hools rarely fight inside stadiums these days. The entire world apart from Italy.
Italians have a chronic inferiority complex, and seek to remedy this by posting a small army at all their major football grounds on match day. When restrictions are enforced, only season ticket holders, residents of Rome or the Lazio region are allowed through the turnstiles.
(8) Where in Rome can I buy AS Roma shirts, scarves and general club merchandise?
A: If you want to be taken to the cleaners, go to the 'official' Roma stores dotted around the city centre. If you are clever and just want keepsake colours, buy shirts and every other item of clothing imaginable bearing Giallorosso logos, slogans etc. from bootleg merchandise stalls flanking the bridge which leads to the Stadio Olimpico. You won't pay much more than €10 - €20. Haggle and pay a bit less.
(9) Roma Ultras, what's the score?
(10) Roma Ultras rent shops and office space in and around town, but where? Can I pop in for a cup of coffee and say hello?
A: Not really, no. We'll be updating this question in due course with the current street address of every Ultras group in the Curva Sud, just in case you need to know.
If you want to have your say, hang on in there until we have our comments script up and running. It'll be ready in a day or two. ROMA TICKETS (CURVA SUD, DISTINTI SUD)
First port of call is accommodation in Rome. By far the biggest outlay on holiday is accommodation, but booking a cheap hotel, B&B or hostel in the Italian capital, one of the most expensive in the world, is in fact easily done. The websites we link to offer plenty of discounts, and their prices are very competitive for what they offer. Hostelbookers and Booking.com allow customers to rate and review establishments in which they have stayed.

Are you looking for a comfortable and modern bed and breakfast in Rome with lots of top rated reviews on the internet? Many football fans choose to stay at When In Rome Accommodation. Situated just a few minutes walk away from Termini, When In Rome offer great value for money and are respected in the local area, as many Italians stay there as foreigners.
For hostel lovers, head over to Hostelbookers for the cheapest of the cheap accommodation in Rome, there's plenty of it from less than £10/night especially between November and February.
Rome is a very expensive city but it is possible to find good 3 and 4 star hotel rooms at discount prices. We always recommend Booking.com for families and couples who want to save money while staying in good quality accommodation close to the centre.

Book a walking tour with When in Rome Tours who run excellent guided tours of Rome at a great price. Their service is perhaps the best way to learn about the Eternal City. Always small groups led by a native English or Spanish speaking guide. One of the most popular Rome tours agencies, When In Rome have an office next to the Vatican museums for last minute bookings and enquiries.
Eternal Tours Rome offer exclusive private tours with official guides, who have studied the history, art and archaeology of the city for many years, before passing the notoriously tough Rome tour guide exam with distinction.
Check out Roma Lazio. It started life as a blog, became a cult website about football in Rome, and has since evolved into a reliable and popular tickets point. / www.romalazio.co.uk
Updated daily with news, gossip, transfer rumours, ticket updates, Roma fixtures, live match reports and much more, they've penned over 150,000 words in the name of capital calcio down the years, seen off Ultras in Rome, hooligans from English clubs and all manner of lowlife in between times, banned an entire country from buying tickets for two years (USA) and now it is rumoured that a controversial book written by their editor entitled 'The real Rome Derby', about ticketing, touts, and organised violence between rival fans of Roma and Lazio, is to be published in 2011.
There are plenty of Irish pubs in Rome, some of which have been rated below. Next on the list are the Scholars Lounge (can anyone afford to drink there these days?), Fiddlers Elbow (the first Irish pub in Rome) and Trinity College.
    (1) Druids Rock - (Piazza Esquilino)
The only pub on earth where the landlord calls his bar manager ten minutes before kick off to inform regulars that the match will not be shown. Regulars who have travelled across the city to line his pockets. Nice enough during the day, but if you want to watch sport walk down Via Urbana to Finnegans. / 6/10
    (2) Finnegans - (Via Cavour)
Plenty of expat locals frequent Finnegans which is probably the best Irish pub in Rome, and the official Celtic pub in Rome too. Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester City fans pile in on match day. The only thing missing is a main room with a giant screen, but smaller screens installed in the corner of each of the four existing rooms make do. Pleasant staff always willing to help, great location. / 9/10
    (3) Druids Den - (Santa Maria Maggiore)
Just a few minutes walk from Termini station, a traditional Irish pub with bags of charm and character can be found tucked away behind the pilgrim church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The den is a big part of the vibrant local drinking scene and fills up with AS Roma fans on match day. Savour the best pint of Guinness in Rome if not on earth. Indie, rock and trip hop beats mixed by world class bar staff comes as standard. A saloon bar next door is newly opened with less stools, more legroom. / 10/10 ... when the den is not full of nazi skinheads who drink there in the week.
    (4) Shamrock - (Bottom of Via Cavour)
A rugby union stronghold built between the Colosseum and Trajans Forum. We're giving it the maximum for food, drinks, decor, service, and for just being a proper pub. You wouldn't know you were in Rome after a few pints in the Shamrock. Whether or not that's good or bad is debatable. / 10/10
    (5) Cork's Inn - (Bottom of Via Nazionale)
Another rugby pub in the city centre. It's a bit of a maze inside with curious low bench seats in the main room which make for a most uncomfortable viewing experience. It is normal to leave the pub with a sore back and stiff neck, so the more you've had to drink the better. The bar area is small but cosy and they have a games room in the back to keep the locals happy. The Cork's saving grace is ample seating outside, personable staff (Italian), great food and it's amazing location - less than 100 metres from Trajan's market. Not an expat pub, but it could be. / 7/10
We are always updating this section with things to do in Rome, where to go for a drink, what to see, what's on etc. so come back soon!
